Kinderopvangtoeslag: What Working Parents Need to Know
Published on 2026-08-12 · 4 min read · Coinest Team
Childcare in the Netherlands costs enough that most working parents can't just pay the invoice and move on. Kinderopvangtoeslag is the government allowance built to soften that cost, and this guide covers the question that matters before you apply: do you qualify, and roughly how does the amount work. Rates and income tables change yearly, so we stay qualitative on the numbers and point you to where the real figures live.
- Kinderopvangtoeslag is a monthly contribution toward registered childcare costs, paid by Dienst Toeslagen, but it doesn't cover unregistered babysitting or informal care
- Your childcare provider must be listed in the LRK (Landelijk Register Kinderopvang); no LRK number means no allowance for those hours
- Both parents (or you and your toeslagpartner, meaning your spouse or registered partner) generally need to be working, studying, in a reintegration trajectory, or following a mandatory integration course
- The allowance scales with your combined income and with the hours worked by whichever parent works fewest hours, not a flat amount per child
- Toeslagen.nl (Dienst Toeslagen) publishes this year's actual percentages and hour limits — always check there before assuming what you'll get
What kinderopvangtoeslag actually covers
Kinderopvangtoeslag is a monthly payment from Dienst Toeslagen toward the cost of daycare (dagopvang), out-of-school care (buitenschoolse opvang), or a registered childminder (gastouder). It lands in your bank account separately from the invoice: you still pay the provider directly, and the allowance offsets part of that bill afterward, similar to how zorgtoeslag works for health insurance. It only applies to registered care: a neighbor watching your kids, or an unregistered childminder, doesn't qualify, however good the arrangement is.
Who qualifies
Two things need to be true at once.
The childcare has to be LRK-registered. The Landelijk Register Kinderopvang is the national registry of approved daycare centers, out-of-school care providers, and childminders. Every registered provider has an LRK number, needed on your application. Ask a prospective provider for theirs before you sign anything.
Both parents need a qualifying activity. Both you and your toeslagpartner generally need to be working, studying at a recognized institution, in a work-reintegration trajectory, or enrolled in a mandatory integration (inburgering) course. Self-employed and freelance income counts too. A single parent only needs to meet one of those conditions.
Before committing to a childcare spot, ask the provider directly for their LRK registration number and check it against the public LRK register. Providers sometimes fall off the register temporarily during ownership changes or relocations, which is enough to interrupt your allowance even if nothing about the care itself changed.
Two numbers, not one
Combined taxable income sets your reimbursement percentage. The hours worked by whichever parent works fewest hours sets your hour ceiling — the cap on how many childcare hours you can claim, even if you've bought more. Multiply the two, per child: that's the payment.
| Factor | How it behaves (illustrative) |
|---|---|
| Combined household income | Lower income → higher reimbursement percentage; phases down as income rises |
| Hours of the parent working fewest hours | Sets the ceiling on eligible hours per month; working more raises that ceiling |
| Number of children in care | Each child assessed against the same percentage, with separate hour caps |
Say a family with two working parents, one full-time and one three days a week, uses daycare for their toddler and after-school care for their eldest. Their reimbursement percentage depends on combined income; their maximum claimable hours depend on the three-day parent's hours, not the full-time parent's. The actual percentages and hour caps for the current year live only on Toeslagen.nl.
Kinderopvangtoeslag is paid monthly as a provisional amount based on the income and hours you report in advance. If your actual year-end income comes in higher than estimated, Dienst Toeslagen can reclaim part of what you received. Update your estimate as soon as your income or work hours change, rather than waiting for the annual reconciliation.
Where to check this year's real numbers
Because the reimbursement percentages, hour caps, and maximum hourly rates change most years, this guide deliberately doesn't quote any of them. Toeslagen.nl runs a proefberekening (trial calculation): enter your income, hours, and childcare costs and get an estimate based on this year's actual rules. That's the only reliable source, not a number half-remembered from last year.
Matching the allowance to the invoice
Kinderopvangtoeslag and the childcare invoice arrive on their own schedules, not together. Hours shift mid-year, the provisional payment stays where it was set, and the two drift apart. Coinest categorizes toeslagen income alongside childcare payments, so you catch that drift before the numbers stop lining up.
Coinest puts that next to the rest of household income too, without reconciling it by hand every month.
